GM Makes More Room for CarPlay in Its New Trucks

Automotive News:

General Motors is integrating Apple Inc.’s CarPlay in its latest infotainment system, three years after upsetting some consumers by eliminating the popular interface from its electric vehicles.

The new system will allow drivers to use CarPlay or Google’s Android Auto on a split screen that also shows key vehicle gauges such as fuel, tire pressure, Super Cruise hands-free driving and towing information. In addition, the system enables the driver to use vehicle functions and phone apps with less toggling between screens.

There are many reasons to resist CarPlay: control over the experience, integration across the car’s components and subsystems, and control over the customer relationship.

But customers generally expect CarPlay, and only a small number of players have gotten away with not supporting it.

Tesla and Rivian are two of them. The common threads: both brands are significantly differentiated, to the point where a meaningful number of customers will accept the trade-offs, and both have strong, deeply integrated in-house tech stacks.

Whether Ferrari discloses Elettrica order-book depth

Ferrari reports order-book coverage in quarters, not units, and has done so consistently. The interesting case is the first quarter in which it declines to break out the Elettrica separately. Silence on a single model would be the disclosure.

Whether BMW ships Neue Klasse software on the same date as the metal

Every legacy maker that has attempted a clean-sheet software stack has shipped the car first and the stack later. BMW has said the iX3 launches with both. If the launch slips to a staged software rollout, the platform claim weakens even though the vehicle arrives on time.

Whether Genesis holds its price ladder through the GV90 launch

The GV90 is priced above anything Genesis has sold in volume, and the brand has never had to defend a top rung while the rungs below it discount. Watch the transaction data, not the MSRP: if incentives on the GV80 widen to move metal ahead of the GV90, the ladder is being paid for from below.

The tell arrives with the first full quarter of deliveries. Related: the Genesis brand page tracks the wider claim.
